Buh Bye 2009

Hi Everyone :o)

It's almost 2010. Yikes, when did I get so old. I remember when the ball dropped in nineteen- eighty, I mean ninety *cough* nevermind...

Well. 2009 is almost over. As I write this post it is New Year's Eve. So thus I shall take the time to reflect on some things I learned this past year and some things I actually accomplished!

Warning - exorbitant amount of bullets to follow...

  • It's not enough to merely survive a traumatic situation. I need to learn and grow from it too.

  • My heart is strong both physically and mentally

  • I found out what I want to be when I grow up.

  • I wrote my first complete (well not quite complete, but a first draft version) draft.

  • Music is vitally important in my life

  • My family and friends are great (I knew that already) however, they don't all get what writing a book entails.

  • My Internet friends are also vitally important to my life as a writer and they're pretty friggen awesome too!

  • Twitter rules!

  • Punctuation is my Achilles heel... oh and tenses

  • I have a voice in my writing and I can spot it in any draft

  • Blogging takes time, but it's always worth it!!

  • My husband is awesome

  • I'm still weird, but it's okay, cause I've met others who are weirder or just as weird... Ha

  • Writing takes work, and I need to do it every day. Thank you NaNoWriMo

  • I don't like exercising but fear I will have to succumb to its evils soon... *sigh*

  • If you're still reading these- you are a patient person :o)

  • I do want to be a mom someday (I wasn't sure before- but after heart surgery I know I'm ready for anything life tosses casually to me)

  • A big thank you to all the wonderful people who stop by and read this blog. Without you I would be writing to myself. You give me a voice and make this blog everything it is :o)

Happy 2010 - be safe and have fun!

Talk to ya next year :o)

Monday Featured Blog- The Bookshelf Muse

    Hi Everyone!

I hope you're staying warm where you are. I'm snuggled in my new Snuggie - so I'm toasty as I write this post - it's 19 degrees out there. Yikes.

I also hope you had a great holiday! Mine was wonderful. Fun times with family and friends; after I was finally off of work, of course ;o)

Next up, New Year's, then I go on vacation for a week! I'm not going anywhere (I wish) but I won't be working - and that's a bonus, also my lil sis is coming to stay!

Shpeal about the featured blogs - Monday Featured Blogs will post every Monday until I run out of blogs to feature (yeah right!) If you want to be featured, shoot me an email, and I'll add ya to the list :o)

Anyhoo - I give you our featured blog - This is one of the most helpful, creative blogs I've found. I featured it once before on this blog - you can find the post Here. I've since gained quite a few more followers (thank you!) so I wanted to highlight its awesomeness again!

Angela, zombie lover and creative soul over at The Bookshelf Muse has a unique blog. It has different thesaurus' that list emotions , settings and descriptions, color, texture and shapes. I've used it and I think it's brilliant.

So you may ask... how does this help me?

Let's say you've used the same action a few times. Your character's angry. You've showed him/her making a fist... What else can I use to show anger? Funny you should ask...

Go on over to The Bookshelf Muse and indulge in the plethora of beats so you can make your character's anger come to life. A few examples from the blog - talking in a carefully controlled tone or voice shaking.

I believe this a valuable tool that writers can only benefit from and Angela is a cool girl too!

She also has an uber cool series on the Seven Deadly Sins of Novel Writing. She's gone through 2 of them and they are extremely accurate and helpful. Check out Seven Deadly Sins of Novel Writing - Sin 1 & Seven Deadly Sins of Novel Writing - Sin 2.

Angela is also on twitter now too! Click here to follow

    The 411 from Angela's profile -

I write Chapter Books, Middle Grade and Young Adult books starring clever, wacky characters. My work is represented by fabulous Jill Corcoran at the Herman Agency.

So go on and head over - there's a ton to check out!

Well that's it for today folks! Once again my Detroit Lions had their dastardly plan foiled again... Well we'll get the 2nd pick in the draft at least, let's hope they don't waste it!

Farewell my wonderful online friends, until next time :o)

    Happy Monday!

Fun Day - Christmas Facts & Clips!

    Greetings from the great Midwest,

Well. This won't be a regular post - there won't be any writing woes or even complaining! Yay.

    Instead.

I'm going to post some fun facts about Christmas and a few clips of my favorite Christmas movies - Elf and we can't forget National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation!

    Fun Christmas Facts

  • In 1843, "A Christmas Carol" was written by Charles Dickens in just six weeks.
  • The first president to decorate the white house Christmas tree in the United States was Franklin Pierce.

  • Germany made the first artificial Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers and dyed green.

  • Electric lights for trees were first used in 1895.

  • The first Christmas cards were vintage and invented in 1843, the Victorian Era. (You can read more about the history of Christmas Cards here.)

  • "It's a Wonderful Life" appears on TV more often than any other holiday movie.

  • "Rudolph" was actually created by Montgomery Ward in the late 1930's for a holiday promotion. The rest is history.

  • "Jingle Bells" was first written for Thanksgiving and then became one of the most popular Christmas songs.

  • If you received all of the gifts in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas," you would receive 364 gifts.

  • The first state to recognize the Christmas holiday officially was Alabama.

  • Christmas became a national holiday in America on June, 26, 1870.

  • Clearing up a common misconception, in Greek, X means Christ. That is where the word "X-Mas" comes from. Not because someone took the "Christ" out of Christmas.

  • More diamonds are sold around Christmas than any other time of the year.

  • In Mexico, wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve is said to bring new love in the upcoming year.

On to the movie clips! We'll see how long these stay up :o) Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Hmmm. Do I put a comma there?

    Hi Everyone!
Still fighting that crud over here for the third time in 6 weeks! Working on getting better. May be quiet the rest of the week while I try and cure what ails me.

But enough about lil ole me.

    Editing.

One word. Many possible outcomes. Yes I am at that point in my WIP. I need to edit it. So I've sent it out to two Beta/Crit partners and received it back. So... now what?

How do I organize what I've written? Well, I actually don't know. I have two different copies of my story with different edits in them. I've read through them. I assume I need to start at the beginning and just add stuff and delete stuff right? Ha.

Well, while I ponder that question, I will share some thoughts on what they thought of my masterful work. (sense the sarcasm there- oh, good you're still with me)

What I've figured out about my writing/story, per the two awesome writer friends willing to read it without any editing yet whatsoever, is:

  • I have horrible punctuation- well this I may have already known!

  • I need more dialogue tags- very badly- I sense the frustration in the comments. Sorry guys.

  • I need description- I seldom do description in a first draft- takes time- I like to get to the action and plot- then add it in. Hard to read it without it though.

  • I have decent twists- this I was very happy about- some of the twists were planned, but two in particular came out of nowhere it seemed! Yay for spontaneity!

  • The chemistry is good between the MC and the love interest- Also good to hear. That's hard to manufacture.
  • My MC needs work- she does. She's a bit dramatic. I have NO idea where she gets that from. *whistles in a corner*

  • Update: Added for value and because my crit partner would kill me if I didn't say it. Tenses- I have trouble staying in the same tense. Very true. need to figure that out!

  • So. What have you learned from others about your own writing? How do you start this whole editing thingamabob?

Have a great rest of the week everyone! Still haven't bought any presents yet.. Eeeek!

Monday Featured Blog- Megan Rebekah Blogs... and Writes

    Hello Everyone!
I hope y'all had a good weekend :o) They go so fast! I managed to catch yet another cold virus (this one's from my hubs- thank you honey)

I'm making this post on Sunday, so I'm also watching the Detroit Lions lose- really bad- um... really, really bad. [insert sigh]

Now, without further adieu, I give you Megan Rebekah's blog!

Megan over at Megan Rebekah Blogs... and Writes has a fantastic blog. It's chocked full of wonderful goodies! She talks about writing, current topics in publishing and just about life in general.

A recent post that lingered with me was Write From The Heart It's a must read, for sure!

I consider myself lucky she found me and followed this blog, because I found her blog too! If you're not following her, what are you waiting for? :o)

The profile 411 on Megan Rebekah:

I'm a former teacher, former child abuse investigator and current aspiring YA author. In my spare time, I play with dogs, scale tall buildings and paint abstract landscapes with my toes. Only 67.74% of the above statements are true.

Welp. Christmas is only 11 days away! Yikes. I personally haven't bought a thing. I have some plans though. I did get my Christmas cards done on Saturday before the sickness set in, thank goodness, don't know that I would have found the motivation otherwise. Anyhoo- have a great week everyone. I'll try to get a couple posts this week- I was bad last week...

Oh and this was our patio this weekend...

So... have y'all done your Christmas/holiday shopping yet? Any big plans for the holidays?

I Thought I'd Be An Astronaut.

    'ello everyone!

I know I don't normally post on Tuesdays, but I thought- what the heck- ya only live once right? Well, except if you're in my WIP.

So, my dear mother has been talking about her daughter who wrote a book- which I think is so sweet- well she was telling a friend of hers (mine too- we all golf together) about how I wrote this book.

Her friend (we'll call her P) has known me since I was a little girl. Well P told my mom that she remembers me telling her that I wanted to write a book. I was 11 years old.

Uh, what? Imagine my surprise when I heard this. You see, I was under the impression I wanted to be a singer or an actress, lawyer, astronaut, you know- easily accessible careers.

So, apparently I've wanted to write a book for *cough* years! Hearing that made me even more determined to make this dream a tangible one. And you know what else is cool- P writes too. And with some encouragement from me, she has now written a prologue to her book! Yay :o)

So, I ask you my wonderful followers and variable who's who of the writing community (Hey some positivity please...LOL), How long have you known you've wanted to be a writer?

What up new Followers! And a Howdy Doo to my vintage peeps!

Have a tubular Tuesday everyone :o)

Monday Featured Blog- What Am I Doing In Mexico

Hey Folks! I hope you are all staying warm. A little cold here, but winter has reared it's ugly, odd-shaped head.

Well, the featured blog today is for the first writer friend I met online. Melanie answers the question--- What Am I Doing In Mexico?

And you know what she does there? A lot of writing, editing, puppy training and dealing with the largest of insects and pests I could ever imagine *shiver*

Her blog is a favorite of mine and her posts range from her experience in Mexico, flash fiction pieces to writing and editing questions. She is kind, helpful, and I credit her with helping me navigate the online part of my writing journey.

One particular flash fiction piece of hers I really liked was Brainstorming-- Check it out!

Here's the 411 on her profile:

I'm a Midwest-girl roughing it in Mexico with my husband. Well, we're not exactly roughing it. We have running water and glass in the windows, but it is really hot.

Melanie's blog was the second writing blog I discovered after Nathan Bransford's. So check it out and see what she's doing in Mexico!

So... My hubs and I had an interesting weekend over here-- Furnace decided to take a crap Saturday night at like 11 pm, so we shelled out $500 for a valve replacement on our furnace! So far so good- seems to be working... which is good cause it was 26 degrees!

Anyway- I won my fantasy football league this week- sadly the Lions lost-- Again. I know you're surprised, I totally was... yeah. Not really. LOL

Put up the Christmas tree and went shopping with mom-- was a nice weekend! Hope everyone had equally fantastic weekends and that your heat worked and your football teams won!

    Happy Monday Everyone!

My first Meme (yeah I have no clue what that means) & An Awesome Contest

Greetings Earthlings ( yeah I just watched the Star Trek movie-- how good was that? Awesome I say.)

A couple things today-- and I apologize for the long post-- I can get long winded...

melane over at Chasing the Dream was kind enough to tag me for a Meme-- basically (I'm guessing here) I answer some questions then tag a couple people. So my two peeps I'm tagging are--- *drum roll*

Lost Wanderer over at Lost Wanderer's Writing Blog & C R Ward over at Random Thoughts of the Writerly Kind

    On with the questions--

    1. What's the last thing you wrote? What's the first thing you wrote that you still have?
Do you mean specifically? *goes and looks* “I don’t know what to believe anymore.” That was the last sentence I wrote in my NaNo story (it's not done yet.) First thing I wrote that I still have is an awful story from 8th grade English about mythology, I think. It's amazing how bad my handwriting was... Eeek.

    2. Write poetry?
I used to- Don't really a lot anymore, but that was the first type of writing I ever did. There's even a poem of mine buried in this blog somewhere (yeah I think I put it under poetry-- not so hard to find.)

    3. Angsty poetry?
Not anymore-- it used to be-- boy was it ever!

    4. Favorite genre of writing.
I love the paranormal, also I like some humor & action! I get bored easily, so literary fiction is sometimes lost on me.

    5. Most annoying character you've ever created.
Oh my first attempt at a novel I created a major Mary Sue- her friend was better, and that is why she remained in three of my other stories. For some reason I used to write the Secondary Characters better than the Protagonist. I've since learned to balance it better.

    6. Best plot you've ever created?
Best? Hmmm. I don't know if it's the best-- that's probably yet to come, but the NaNo novel has the best plot in my opinion--so far.

    7. Coolest plot twist you've ever created?
    Same as #6.

    8. How often do you get writer's block?
A lot, but I play bejeweled and go lay in bed and something always comes to me. It only lasts a day or two. My mind is always generating new crap to write about-- yeah I mean crap too-- well most of it.

    9. Write fan fiction?
I haven't tried. I have nothing against it-- I've never read it either, but I am a huge Star Wars fan so I would probably read that.

    10. Do you type or write by hand?
LOL- Um. Type. My handwriting is atrocious. Really, you don't want to see it.

    11. Do you save everything you write?
Most-- there are some crappy half written drafts that are trapped in my old ibook. It's okay though-- they were beyond horrible-- remember #5? Yeah same one.

    12. Do you ever go back to an idea after you abandoned it?
Haven't yet, but I'm not opposed to it.

    13. What's your favorite thing you've ever written?
Favorite-- oh wow. Well I have some favorite scenes- one is in my attempt at a mystery novel. I still have a character trapped in there (secondary of course) that I need to resurrect in another novel. There's a couple scenes in the NaNo novel that I do love.

    14. What's everyone else's favorite story that you've written?
It's a bit too soon to tell. My sister enjoyed that mystery novel I was just talking about. I think it had potential but Mysteries are hard to pull off, as I've discovered. Someday I'll go back and finish it.

    15. Ever written romance or angsty teen drama?
My YA I wrote I wouldn't say is angsty- Maybe a little, drama- yes, humor- yes, romance- yes

    16. What's your favorite setting for your characters?
That's the last to come for me. Somewhere in the midwest is where my current one takes place- I go with what I know.

    17. How many writing projects are you working on right now?
Two are in the works. I'm going to have to choose which to edit, both first drafts are done. I need to add a lot to both though.

    18. Have you ever won an award for your writing?
Nope. I would need to submit something for that. I did just enter a YA contest for the title and first 250 words. I guess that means I should finish that one first. I'm hopeful, but I know it's a long shot. Hey-- why not?

    19. What are your five favorite words.
To write? inevitable, tirade, Purgatory (it's in the title of WIP), mortified and Woo Hoo (yeah that's two- but they go together and I write it A LOT.)

    20. What character have you created that is most like yourself.
They all have a little me in them, except they are braver, and much funnier because I'm not quite as quick witted in real life, almost...

    21. Where do you get ideas for your characters?
People I know, People I see on series on tv, read in books, listen to at work (mall)

    22. Do you ever write based on your dreams?
Not yet, they are too weird. But, I would if a coherent one came about. Oooo I like that word too- coherent (add that to the list)

    23. Do you favor happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
Whichever works for the story. I'd like to always keep ya hangin' but I wouldn't like that as a reader. I think a nice combo of "what if," and "happy ending," should do the trick!

    24. Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
    Yes, unfortunetely.

    25. Does music help you write?
YES! I don't ever write without my itunes. As I spoke of in a previous post-- I love the Genius button on itunes.

    26. Quote something you've written. Whatever pops into your head.
"My parents believe your name should have meaning. They tell me that's why they named me Snow. My brother Lennon was born the same day as the guy that was in the Beatles. I was just happy I wasn’t born on Yoko Ono’s birthday."

    Onto the awesome contest!!

Shannon over at Ramblings of a Wannabe Scribe is having an awesome contest where you could win a signed copy of Twilight! I was a fan of the book, so I entered. You can enter too!

Well that's all for me. Hope everyone is having a nice week so far. My cold is on sabbatical and I hope it doesn't return! I haven't written since Saturday-- and it's been a nice break. Will start editing one of the WIP's tomorrow.

Have you done a Meme before? If so link it in the comments. I'd love to take a look! Also, who has seen Star Trek-- the new one? Did you like it?

    Enjoy your day!
